Key contacts are APTA members who serve as primary contacts with their senators or representatives in the United States Congress. There may be more than one key contact for a member of Congress. Key contacts are essential to build valuable relationships with legislators to raise awareness of the issues facing the physiotherapy profession. Important contacts are encouraged to meet with their members throughout the year and provide feedback on meetings to the APTA Ministry of Government Affairs. Start by emailing advocacy@apta.org! In April, Fred will present the “Legislative Update,” a review of current and potential legislative activities impacting the transit industry by providing an overview of infrastructure funding and permitting legislation, and discussing APTA`s advocacy strategy to promote public transit in 2022 and beyond. Federal Affairs Liaison Officers (LAOs) serve as a link between their component and APTA`s Government Affairs Division on federal issues. Each APTA Section and Section President chooses a member to act as the FAL of these components for a one-year term. The ALF is responsible for disseminating information to its components, maintaining links with its members of Congress, and contributing from the grassroots to APTA`s Ministry of Government Affairs. The ALF also encourages their states to engage in grassroots advocacy and lead the August holiday visits to the district for their state.
