If they both drink vampire blood before starting the ritual, the one who dies from them will not be gone forever. Lizzie called it a really possible option in episode 4 of season 4 of Legazie, but essentially pushed her out of her mind and left her as a desperate last option if nothing else comes from all of Caroline`s research into the ritual. She was desperate and in deep grief, so she committed suicide, but died with Lily`s blood in her system, becoming the first heretic to exist. She didn`t tell anyone about Julian`s misdeeds and kept the whole incident a secret for more than a century and a half. For a few decades, she traveled to Europe with heretics Julian and Lily, and in 1903, when they all returned to the United States, the Circle of Twins attacked them all and locked them up in a prison world for their mass killings in Europe. A heretic, for those unfamiliar with the TVD definition of the term, is a sucking witch (who has no power of her own but can absorb it from magical items or creatures to use in spells) who completes the transition to vampireism. Once they become a vampire, the sucking part of them has a constant source of magic to tap into, and so they never lack power for the spells and magic gadgets they seek. Kai also describes himself as a heretic after turning into TVD With the powerful combination of vampire and wolf abilities and skin even thicker than ordinary vampires (there are really only two ways to drive them out of the real world), hybrids are among the oldest creatures in the TVD universe. Heretics were a group of vampire-witch hybrids, but not all vampire-witch hybrids are heretics. Since it`s the witches` skills that have made tribids and heretics so powerful, it`s easy to see why they`re next on our list. They don`t outdo vampires just because they don`t have the long supernatural life, unless they want to dissipate the power to find a spell that can give them. It is their vulnerability and human nature that make them quite magical intermediaries. So it`s safe to conclude that the final scene of Season 6 is due to the heretics and the horrible and unforgivable thing mentioned above that they do. The original six members before becoming vampires were known as the Siphoners, a subdivision of witches with no ability to practice magic unless first sucked into another source of magic. Because of this unique ability, they were considered “abominations” by the Circle of Twins and eventually banned between the late 19th century and early 20th century. Banished to the leaderless world, the heretics fell under the leadership of Lillian Salvatore, a vampire and prominent Ripper. In 1903, Lily turned heretics into vampires, becoming the world`s first clan of witch-vampires. As vampires, heretics had fallen into one of nature`s cracks, allowing them not only to preserve their ability to practice magic, but also to have a source of energy to tap into. This transformation and subsequent discovery meant that the siphoners were the only known beings who could be both witch and vampire.

The heretics were now in possession of great power and returned with Lily in the fall of 1903 to Northwest America, the birthplace of the Twin League, to take revenge on the alliance. The circle, however, sensed their attempts at revenge and banished the heretics and Lily into a prison world at a meeting in New York Harbor — a time loop from October 31, 1903. They achieved this by channeling the power of the Northern Lights above their heads to power the ascendant, a powerful device capable of traveling between realities.
